Living Donor Liver Transplant : What is the Success Rate in India

Overview

A living donor liver transplant involves transplanting a portion of the liver from a living donor into a recipient whose liver is no longer functioning properly. In this the donor’s remaining liver regenerates itself and returns to its normal volume and capacity within a couple of months post surgery while the transplanted liver portion grows and restores the normal liver function in the recipient. The living donor liver transplant is an alternative to waiting for deceased donor liver availability. This also allows the recipient to avoid the potential health complications related to waiting for transplants. It is more common among children needing a liver transplant than adults due to the scarcity of the appropriately sized deceased donor organs. Most of the living liver donors are close family members or friends of the liver transplant candidates.

Types Of Liver Transplant

There are three types of liver transplant surgery procedures:
  1. Orthotopic Transplantation : This approach involves replacing the recipient liver with the donor liver which after removal should be preserved and packed for transport and must be transplanted into the recipient within 12 to 18 hours. After the recipient’s liver is removed, the new healthy donor liver is connected and blood flow is restored.
  2. Heterotopic Transplantation Surgery : This involves the addition of a healthy donor liver at another site while the diseased liver is left intact. This liver transplant surgery procedure is being performed when the doctor is of the opinion that the diseased liver might recover.  So the healthy liver is attached very near to the original liver. If the liver recovers then the other organ shrivels away if not then the original one shrivels while the donor liver performs the body functions.
  3. Reduced size liver transplantation : This is the most performed type on children and involves transplanting a part of the healthy donor liver into a patient. This procedure is done when 15-20% of the original liver is intact hence one donor liver can be used for two successful transplants.
What is Success rate of Living donor Liver Transplant

The success rate of living donor liver transplant is 55 to 60 percent for 15 to 20 years. Around 90 percent of transplant recipients survive one year post surgery. Most patients lead a normal, healthy and productive life following a liver transplant.

Living Donor Liver Transplant Benefits and Risk

The living donor liver transplant benefits include:
  • Helps save the lives of people with end stage liver disease and increases the number of livers for people on the transplant waiting list.
  • Liver donors and the transplant recipients can schedule their surgery at a time which works for both people.
  • Flexible scheduling allows the transplant to occur sooner that could save valuable time spent on the liver transplant wait list which reduces the risk of the liver disease from getting worse.
  • Liver donors can feel good knowing that they have had a huge impact on another person’s life.
  • Recipients typically have improved long-term outcomes and quick recovery times as they receive a portion of a healthy donor’s liver.
The living donor liver transplant risk include infection, bile leakage, organ damage or other problems or even death in very rare cases.
